Designing and Tuning High-Performance Fuel Injection Systems

So you've decided that fuel injection is for you, but want to know more. Many questions surround what appears to many as more of a black art than science. Engine tuning used to be the hallowed ground of vehicle engineers and cutting-edge hot rodders. For years, the carburetor filled the needs of enthusiasts and provided simple adjustments at the end of a flat-bladed screwdriver. But today, electronic controls for engines are the norm. Even the casual enthusiast who actually drives his favorite hot rod on the streets can easily see the benefit of increased precision when he fires the car up for the first time each spring. A properly tuned EFI system rarely needs anything more than the turn of the key to come to life.

Following up his best-selling title, Engine Management: Advanced Tuning, author Greg Banish goes in-depth on the combustion basics of fuel injection as well as benefits and limitations of standalone. Learn useful formulas, VE equation and airflow estimation, and more. Also covered are setups and calibration, creating VE tables, creating timing maps, auxiliary output controls, start to finish calibration examples with screen shots to document the process. Useful appendixes include glossary and a special resources guide with standalone manufacturers and test equipment manufacturers.

Aftermarket standalone systems are a great way to dial in performance and reliability. Designing and Tuning High-Performance Fuel-Injection Systems is the book you need to become an expert in this popular modification.

  1. Focuses on aftermarket EFI, Not the original system. I expected this book to talk about the original EFI system your car came with, But it suggests you go out and spend a fortune for an aftermarket EFI, and talks only about tuning them.

  2. efi 101. what i like the most about the book is how easy it is to understand what they are talking about, some of the other books i have read use too many words in which i have to pull out the dictionary to understand, this book is simple and straight forward.i would recomend it to any body that is new at the new efi world that is coming from the old school of carburated v8’s.enjoy and learn.

  3. EFI Book. I bought this book because I am working on a carburetor to fuel injection conversion for my classic car. I was hoping this book would give me some insight into the actual tuning process of an EFI system once the conversion had been made. Instead, this book spends a great deal of time covering “Basic Electronics” (ie. Volts, Amps, Ohms), the “Tools and Equipment” (ie Multimeter, fuel pressure gauge) all of the components of an EFI system (ie. coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor, TPS) and describes them in great detail. Then there are a few short pages in the middle of the book in a section called “Tuning Maps and Basic Engine Calibration”. This is where I was hoping to gain a little insight but the book stays so close to the side of the theoretical, it really doesn’t give any more clues on how this would actually be done. I understand that each car, engine and ECU combination is unique and no book could ever cover every combination, but I was hoping to have a better footing when I delve into the tuning of my EFI system. Finally, when that short section is over, with half the book to go, the rest of the pages are devoted to advertising (pgs 57-126)! This may be where this book is best suited or certainly where the most effort was devoted. If you can’t decided whether to buy the Accel, Autotronic, Edelbrock or Holley ECU, then this book will help you with the different offerings from each of a bout 11 different companies. Once you’ve made your choice however, good luck with the setup. You’re on your own from there. Just like guess and check with needles and jets on the carb I just got rid of!

  4. Buy this book. Greg is an OEM calibrator who actually went to college for this stuff. He’s worked at Ford and GM, in the tuning department. He’s had his own tuning shop. He teaches tuning. He teaches SCT’s Advanced Tuning class. This is his second book. I’ve read them both, and attended his SCT class. I can guarantee that they don’t come any sharper than him, when it comes to tuning. As an added bonus, he seems to know how to write in way that’s easy to understand, no matter what your experience level. I’ve read lots of other tuning books, been to EFI University and read Ben Straders book as well, and in my opinion none of them are near as good as this book. So go buy it.This book covers speed density computers more specifically, such as FAST, Big Stuff, Accel, etc. But the details in it still apply to all tuning. His other book, Engine Management: Advanced Tuning covers the Mass Air cars (most OEM EFI systems) a little more closely. Either way, if you’re trying to learn to tune, or want to know more about how EFI works, buy both books. Unfortunately, I can’t say very good things about any of the other tuning books I’ve read. Most are poorly written, way to short and simple, or just don’t help much.

  5. AWESOME!!!! A Must Buy. I have skimmed through many EMS tuning books and never bought any of them because they were too complex, or spoke too much about irrelevent builds, EMS history, etc. This book gives a nice intro and then gets to the meat! This book is by far the most methodical, guiding you step by step through the tuning process, while providing knowledge and tips along the way. After reading this book, I can LITERALLY look at my guage cluster and picture WHERE on a VE/FUEL map my engine curreently resides in just based on my rpms, mph, and selected gear. Its an amazing book, that really makes tuning understandable and practical to the everyday automotive enthusiast. If your new to EMS tuning, get both this book, and his previous one, which spends more time explaining the 101’s of engines, sensors, etc.Get This Book!!! no other even comes close!!!!

  6. Good Learning guide… Maybe A little hard for absolute beginners. This book, and it’s sister book “Engine Management: Advanced Tuning” are great textbooks to have if you are interested in learning about electronic fuel injection, especially in regards to performance tuning. However, being for all intents and purposes, I am an absolute beginner. I have some minor understanding of how an engine works, and I have read many performance magazines for domestic, and import cars. I also have some minor hands on experience, and I have found this book to both be interesting, and somewhat challenging to read. I have to learn as I read, but not so much that I struggle to understand the content. I purchased both books by Greg Banish with the desire to learn the foundation of EFI tuning with to goal of determining if I like, or understand it enough to invest in some tuning software such as HP Tuners or EFI Live, and a training course like […], which I think I will still need.In summary, I think my money was well spent on this and it’s sister book, with both of them being at a medium experience level, but I think I will still need further training before I can tune a car with HP Tuners on my own.

  7. Accel fuel injectors. Good price for a full set of 8 , fast shipping saved $30 compared to other sites. Got these to replace the stock injectors on my 02 mustang gt these are way better than stock car runs smooth now

  8. Truck runs and starts amazing. 1998 Lincoln Navigator. Paired this with new accel coils. Truck runs and starts amazing… Love it!!

  9. Five Stars. they fit just fine

  10. very good and fast. very good and fast

  11. Great book. What can I say, Greg Banish is an OEM calibrator, so he knows his stuff better than tuners that don’t know how OEMs design their PCMs, not have access to millions of dollars of equipment. Very good explanations, great definitions and explanations on why this or that is a good or bad idea.

Manual básico para la inyeccion electronica. Buen Manual para entender de forma basica la inyeccion electrónica, no se expande mucho en el tema pero muy entendible. Lo uso como base para resolver problemas de inyección ya que es muy comprensible.

  13. Perfect replacement. I put these in my 305 5.0L and they work perfectly.

  14. Fast Computer. I had to buy this as a replacement unit for the one I thought that was bad on our fuel injection, but turned out to not be the problem. But kept it anyway as a future spare if needed.

  15. woked fine. worked fine, i ordered 21lb and needed 19 lb and they took them back with no problem then i ordered the 19 lb

  16. Gotta give FAST 5 stars. Purchased the FAST 1.0 in 2015. Gotta say it does have some minor bugs at the beginning; just have to be patient and tweak the handheld. If you take your time, you can install it solo as I did. If you have a solid base “engine with no cam” to work with, it will work flawlessly. Their support staff “was” always on call. I say “was” because I haven’t needed them since 2015.Put this thing on my 1976 Corvette and anytime I want to get up and go, I just jump in and start the thing. No more sticking floats/flooded engines/chokes, hard starts and gas guzzling. Only thing is I wish it had an adjustment for cold idle, so as to bump it up a bit. Never hear much about FAST ; speculating it’s because “the wheel ain’t squeaking”.

  17. Se ve muy bien. Aun no lo he instalado. El tanque de combustible nunca llego

  18. Do not buy unless you want buy 3 right now. Bought an Offroad Jeep that had one of these on it. The seller said one of the things it needed was a new fuel pump. Ordered this because he said it worked good and this is what it had on it. Fixed everything else this showed up I put it on same day. Drove it around for 10 mins and parked it. Came back week later didn’t work. Luckily I did order 2 right off the bat and sure enough put the new one on and it works now. I will be exploring different options these are junk. I could understand if I had multiple hours on it but 10 mins! Not to mention the one that was on it when I bought the jeep that the prior owner told me was bad. Also looked brand new!

  19. Good reading easy to understand. Book made great sense in learning what my tune shop is actually doing with my car

  20. It’s ok. Plugged this into a crown vic to get it started. It let’s the car run and drive but can’t romp on it too hard or it falls on its face.. I don’t know the true psi for this high pressure pump.. may be good for a 4cyl?

  21. Gas. Inline fuel pump works well with my Mazda

  22. As advertised. As advertised
